In 2022, Ukrainian culture faced significant challenges: over 446 cultural monuments were destroyed, 20% of artists emigrated, and the advertising market fell by 63%. Despite this, Ukrainian culture demonstrated resilience, having to quickly find new solutions for preserving data about museum exhibits, archives, and libraries.
Digitizing museums and libraries is a complex and expansive task. It involves converting a large number of documents, sometimes reaching into the millions, into digital versions, a process exemplified by the Library of Congress in the USA. This task requires a blend of cutting-edge technology and meticulous project management.
The various stages of a digitization project include:
The preservation and ensuring access to ‘cultural’ data largely depends on reliable and secure cloud technologies. One of the largest initiatives in this direction in Europe is the Cultural Heritage Cloud by the EU.
Technical experts with experience in cloud infrastructure, data management, and cybersecurity play a crucial role in developing and implementing secure storage solutions. These solutions protect digitised collections from potential risks and ensure their long-term accessibility.
In an era where cultural heritage is increasingly vulnerable, our team has devised a pioneering digital solution for the Ministry of Culture. The main goal of our system is the preservation of museum monuments in local museums and their divisions, and information that adds opportunities for collectors and policymakers to make decisions about one or another location, preservation conditions, visit opportunities, etc.
Responding to this critical need, our team developed an inaugural digital register for museum items, now evolving into its second iteration. This innovative product is engineered to catalogue every museum item within the country, providing real-time updates on their status and location. This advancement is a game-changer in crisis management and artifact recovery.
Our solution was created as a robust, user-friendly, and scalable application. It leverages cloud computing platforms for expansive data storage and adheres strictly to European Data and Security Standards. We exclusively utilize open-source solutions for database and DevOps needs.
This digital solution has not only fulfilled the immediate requirements of the Ministry of Culture but also set a precedent for similar systems across Europe. With a mere 15 countries in Europe possessing an analogous register, our product stands out as a significant market opportunity for broader application and customization. Its alignment with European standards and ease of localization positions it not only as a national treasure but also as a potential international benchmark in cultural heritage management. The triumph of this project paves the way for further expansions and adaptations in different regions, underscoring the critical role of digital transformation in the realm of cultural preservation.
